The Mid-Week Fever Dream
It’s early May, the humidity hasn't quite turned the District into a swamp yet, and for some reason, the concert gods have decided that Wednesday, May 6th, should have the energy of a holiday weekend. We aren’t complaining. If you’re looking to play hooky tomorrow or just need to drown out the sound of your Slack notifications, the city is offering everything from Peruvian cumbia to Dutch synth-pop. This isn't your standard "happy hour and home by nine" kind of night. Put on your comfortable shoes; you’re going to need them.
The Lineup
The heavy hitters are out in full force tonight. Over at The Anthem in the Navy Yard, Dutch sensation Joost Klein is bringing his world tour to the waterfront. Expect a high-energy, eccentric crowd that’s probably still buzzing from his Eurovision-adjacent fame. Meanwhile, if you want a dose of true DC royalty, get yourself to Echostage in Noma. It’s the Big G Birthday Bash, and if you haven't experienced a proper Go-Go celebration in this city, you’re doing DC wrong. It’s loud, it’s local, and it’s going to be packed.
For those who prefer the grit and neon of U Street, the options are dizzying. Indie-electronic trio ŁASZEWO is taking over the 9:30 Club, while just down the street, Black Cat hosts LUSH, the premier lesbian club night in the city. If your vibe is more “hidden warehouse techno,” Simon Doty and Layla Benitez are spinning melodic heaters at Culture. Over in Shaw, the legendary The Howard Theatre is going global with Los Mirlos, bringing those psychedelic Peruvian cumbia sounds that are impossible not to dance to.
If you're looking for something a bit more niche, DC9 is pulling double duty on U Street. They’ve got surf-rockers Foxtide early, followed by a "Seven Nation Army" 2000s dance party that will likely result in a room full of people shouting the White Stripes bassline in unison. It’s chaotic, it’s sweaty, and it’s exactly what the middle of the week requires.
Where to Go If You Want To...
Catch a legendary live set:
Head straight to The Hamilton Live in Downtown to see White Ford Bronco. They are the undisputed champions of 90s nostalgia in this town, and seeing them in a venue with actual acoustics is a treat compared to the usual dive bar scrambles. If you want something more sophisticated, tuck into Mr. Henry's on Capitol Hill for the SoulJourners. It’s the perfect jazz sanctuary to escape the madness of the bigger clubs.
Dance until the lights come on:
For the underground heads, Flash in Shaw is the move. Steller and Danny Daze are taking over the decks, and that sound system doesn't play around. If you want the big-room club experience, Ultrabar in Downtown is weirdly running their "TGIF" Friday party on a Wednesday—because when the vibes are this high, the calendar is merely a suggestion. For a more Latin-infused night, Decades in Dupont Circle is hosting “rita de cinco,” which is sure to be a booze-heavy affair.
Late Night / Looking Ahead
If you aren't ready to call it a night after the shows, grab a late-night pour at ChurchKey in Logan Circle. They’re hosting the Brujos Bash, which is a great way to wind down (or keep going) with some of the best craft beers currently hitting the district. This Wednesday surge is a hell of a precursor to the weekend, so pace yourselves—we’ve still got a long way to go until Sunday.
Drink some water, tip your bartenders, and we'll see you on the dance floor.
